Sustainability: Environmental, Social & Governance Strategy

Reducing our impact through our daily actions

With a focus on people, products and the environment, we work with our customers and suppliers to act responsibly whilst supporting the communities in which we operate.

Driving Real Change Across Our Operations

Smart practices today for a better tomorrow

At every level of our business, we are focused on reducing our environmental footprint and building a more sustainable supply chain. From fuel-efficient driving to carbon reporting and cutting waste, our teams are trained and empowered to take meaningful action every day.

We’ve implemented a range of initiatives to help reduce emissions and limit our impact. All new company cars are hybrid or fully electric - with the majority of our directors already leading by example with EVs. Drivers across our fleet are trained in safe, fuel-efficient techniques, reducing both environmental impact and operating costs.

We currently operate with zero waste to landfill at five of our nine sites - and by the end of 2025, this will apply to all of them. We separate and recycle waste across our business, helping to divert valuable resources from landfill and support a circular economy.

Sustainability

Innovating with Renewable Energy and Green Technology

Clean energy is part of our long-term strategy

We’ve invested heavily in renewable energy, with over 700 kWp of solar panels installed across our network. These systems now generate more than 630 MWh of electricity annually - cutting around 100 tonnes of CO₂ every year.

Energy efficiency is monitored and reported under the ESOS and SECR schemes, with our most recent report showing a 6% reduction in overall energy consumption. From rapid-close freezer doors to automatic refrigerant leak detection, we continue to optimise the energy performance of our chill and cold stores.

We’re also part of the Climate Change Agreement, working to reduce warehousing energy usage while maintaining high performance standards for our customers.

Supporting Our People and Planet

Sustainability starts with our team

We’re creating an internal culture that prioritises responsibility and environmental awareness. Employees benefit from hybrid working options, a Bike2Work scheme, and an Electric Vehicle Salary Sacrifice Scheme - all aimed at reducing commute-related emissions and supporting greener lifestyles.

Closing the Loop with Smart Waste Recovery

Minimising waste, maximising reuse

Our butchery waste is collected and reprocessed through anaerobic digestion - converting organic material into clean, renewable bio-fuel. We also carry Soil Association accreditation and a wide range of responsible product certifications, including Free Range, Red Tractor, Fairtrade, and MSC. We’ve partnered with Arrow Oils to collect and recycle waste cooking oil from our customers. This oil is then converted into bio-fuel - giving waste a second life and helping to reduce emissions in the wider industry.

Our commitment to sustainability

Drivers trained in Fuel Efficient & Safe Driving, encouraging efficient driving; for fuel efficiency and emissions.

All new company cars are either hybrid or fully EV. In 2025 we offered an EV car scheme to our employees.

To minimise food waste, we donate to various charitable food banks in the local area of our sites.

We offer hybrid working arrangements, a Bike 2 Work scheme and an EV Salary Sacrifice Scheme for employees.

We have over 700kWp of solar installed, generating more than 630 MWh of electricity annually, saving around 100 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

We qualify and report to the ESOS and SECR schemes. Our 2023-2024 report indicates a 6% reduction in energy consumption.

Our commitment to sustainability

We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and conducting our operations in a sustainable manner. We are working with a third party to calculate our whole business carbon footprint, enabling us to set science-based targets to further reduce carbon emissions across our company and supply chain. In addition, we have implemented a variety of environmental and sustainable initiatives to genuinely drive down our impact on the environment.

Fuel Efficiency

Drivers are trained in Fuel Efficient & Safe Driving, reducing emissions and environmental impact.

EV Cars

All new company cars are either hybrid or fully EV. Three of our four directors already drive fully electric vehicles.

Zero Waste to Landfill

We seperate and recycle our waste and have zero waste to landfill at five of our sites. All nine sites will be zero waste to landfill by the end of 2025

Hybrid Working

We offer hybrid working arrangements, a Bike 2 Work scheme and an EV salary Sacrifice Scheme for employees.

Solar Panels

We have over 700KWp of solar installed, generating more than 630MWh of electricity annually, saving around 100 tonnes of CO2 per year.

ESOS & SECR Schemes

We qualify and report to the ESOS and SECR schemes. Our 2023-2024 report indicates a 6% reduction in energy consumption.

OurInitiatives

Transport

In Oct 2025, we took delivery of 3 HGV vehicles fitted with ECOOLTEC’s innovative new-generation technology in transport refrigeration. This technology replaces traditional HFC refrigerants that are harmful to the atmosphere and environment, with natural refrigerants which are sustainable and environmentally friendly. We have removed approximately 94 tCO₂e from our carbon footprint through this initiative.

Refrigeration

All refrigeration systems are carefully maintained and optimised to ensure they are running at their most efficient. We have replaced much of our plant across the business to low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. All future plant will use CO₂ as the main refrigerant (replacing traditional F-gas refrigerants which have a higher GWP) as it is even more efficient and works on reduced equipment.

Waste

Our butchery waste is all collected and re-processed through anaerobic digestion into renewable fuels.

Holdsworth Foods work in partnership with Arrow Oils to collect and recycle waste oil from our customers, which is then reprocessed into renewable fuels.

Renewables

All our warehouses are fitted with LED lighting, reducing energy demand for lighting and further reducing heat load on the refrigeration plant.

Green electricity is produced at four of our sites by way of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to power our cold stores drastically reducing our demand on grid electricity.

Carbon Reporting

Compliant with ESOS (Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme) since 2015. Audits of the energy used by our buildings, processes and transport to identify cost-effective energy saving measures.

Compliant with SECR (Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting). We measure and report on our energy and carbon emissions annually. Our 2023-2024 SECR report indicates a 6% improvement in reduction of energy consumed.

Other Initatives

We have a partnership with Auditel who are working with us to initially calculate, and then work to reduce our Co2e emissions and environmental impact by 2028. This will enable us to calculate our scope 3, in addition to our scope 1 and 2 emissions calculated as part of our ESOS and SECR reporting.

Holdsworth Foods carries Soil Association Accreditation as a wholesaler of Organic Certified products, together with carrying product lines which are certified to various sustainable standards including but not limited to: Free Range, Farm Assured, Red Tractor MCS/MSC and Fairtrade.

We own a protected oak woodland which surrounds our Halifax depot and supports many bird and mammal species including resident owls. We have removed or reduced the use of pesticides and herbicides on all of our premises.

We are working with the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on their Wilder Chesterfield project, to bring back species in to areas around our sites.
